Mitropoulos
", 1p, 5½x8½. No place,
1952 September
16, on personal letterhead to Mr. Fischbach.
In full:
"
I received your musical pamphlet and I feel very sorry to have to tell you that you certainly sent it to the wrong person. Although I am a musician, I deal only with professional musicians and professional composers. Your musical sheet I couldn't call a composition or a song or anything. To me, frankly, it looks like a nonsensical affair, and if you were more aware of what music and musical composition is, I am sure you would have been ashamed to send me that. Naturally, everybody is allowed to write down on paper whatever he likes, either in notes or letters, as long as he keeps it for himself and enjoys himself with it. Very sincerely yours
".
Dimitri Mitropoulos (1896-1960)
was a Greek-born American composer. He was
conductor of the New York Philharmonic
from 1949-1958
and the Metropolitan Opera
from 1954-1960. Unorthodox in style, Mitropoulos was noted for
introducing modern works
such as those by Berg, Schoenberg and Krenek. His own compositions include the opera "Soeur Béatrice" (1919) and symphonic work "La mise au tombeau de Christ" (1916). Lightly toned. Normal mailing folds.
